We hired GoDaddy for SEO and they SUCKED.

Long story short, GoDaddy provided us with plagiarized and re-used our own content. Which is ILLEGAL.

We hired GoDaddy SEO services for 5 hours of SEO services just to see what they could do. GoDaddy charges only $50/hr for their SEO service (minimum of 5 hours per service), and quite frankly we wanted to see how our service compared since we charge $100/hr (still less than half the going agency rate in North Texas).

We were told that we would not be billed for “phone consultations”, “on boarding”, and “reporting”. We do not bill for these things either. However, GoDaddy did indeed bill us for those things in the end (we have proof), keep reading.

The sales representative and “SEO Manager” were great in understanding that we already have a great knowledge of SEO, and that we only wanted to hire them to create written copy for landing pages, and that we would implement changes to the website ourselves. This way they wouldn’t have direct access to any website.

Ironically, GoDaddy SEO Services ONLY creates written copy for landing pages. They do NOT provide images, landing page design, or anything of the sort. That’s right! GoDaddy SEO services will NOT create a true landing page. They will ONLY create a blog post article that literally looks like a wall of text. NOT GOOD FOR SEO! We were astonished as any self respecting SEO firm would be…

3 weeks go by, and we’re getting a bit anxious because the service is monthly, and we have not seen any work yet. We were told that all communications would be handled by email or over the phone. Turns out that is NOT true. You have to “login” to GoDaddy, go to “your products”, select the SEO Service, and only then will you be able to see anything related to your SEO service through a extremely limited dashboard.

GoDaddy does a great job at providing you with a simple dashboard that tracks their hours and work activities. It also shows ranking improvements (you can only see accurate rankings if you give them direct access to your google analytics account! We did NOT allow this for obvious reasons). However, it doesn’t do much else beyond that… Additionally, their dashboard was a big eye opener because it showed that we were being billed 2.2 hours for “phone consultations”, “on boarding”, and “reporting”! LOL

Exactly the things they said we would NOT be billed for, we were indeed billed for!

The dashboard also allows you to “approve” or “reject” the written articles created for your website. We checked their work and were surprised that GoDaddy provided us with an article that was around 250 words long (which is too short for a landing page), had plagiarized content, and literally used copy that WE WROTE on another page of the website for HALF of their content.

Here is what they wrote:

The top half is LITERALLY the Google provided definition for the industry of the business and the bottom half is our content STRAIGHT from the website we made. This is the article size for ALL 5 hour SEO services, and it includes literally NOTHING E…
The top half is LITERALLY the Google provided definition for the industry of the business and the bottom half is our content STRAIGHT from the website we made. This is the article size for ALL 5 hour SEO services, and it includes literally NOTHING ELSE. In other words, 2 stolen paragraphs = 5 hours of work.

This is ALL bad, AND ILLEGAL. Legal Zoom agrees:

Although plagiarism is not a criminal or civil offense, plagiarism is illegal if it infringes an author’s intellectual property rights, including copyright or trademark. For example, the owner of a copyright can sue a plagiarizer in federal court for copyright violation.

Needless to say we rejected their “article”, if you could even call it that. Most students would call it an automatic expulsion and an instant F. GoDaddy calls it 5 hours of hard work.

After rejecting the “article” and explaining our reasons why, we called our “SEO Manager” and emailed the sales representative. Neither answered right away. So we logged into our GoDaddy account to cancel the service, only to find out that YOU CAN’T CANCEL THE REOCCURRING SERVICE CHARGE ON YOUR OWN! You are REQUIRED to call their SEO team and speak to a “SEO Manager” in order to cancel their automatic charge. So we did.

Their “SEO Manager” that we called claimed that we NEVER spoke to a real SEO Manager, because he was “the only SEO Manager”. Confused about who we’ve been speaking to, we proceeded to find out that the TINY & PLAGIARIZED article took up a total of 5 hours!? Also explaining that all of our SEO hours were spent. It’s literally two paragraphs.

Keep in mind that they aren’t billing us for the time to create the landing page for their written content, no images or other media files, NOTHING ELSE other than illegal text.

Being that we were totally dissatisfied with everything, and were lied to be everyone, we requested our money back. The new self proclaimed “SEO Manager” said that they’ve already spent the total time allotted for the service and we could NOT receive a refund. This was AFTER he told us that 5 hours for GoDaddy is just a “drop in the bucket”. Teasing at the fact that we had selected only their 5 hour service and that the total budget was relatively small.

After seeing that we could not get our money back and communicating how ALL OF THIS MADE ZERO SENSE, the “SEO Manager” then offered to provide us 10 additional hours to re-write the article. Totally NOT confident in their ability to write anything, we requested those hours be spent exclusively on backlinks from U.S. Domain sites. We specifically requested U.S. Domain backlinks because they have a LONG reputation of building backlinks on CHEAP FOREIGN SPAM BLOGS. Look it up!

Here is a list of the work they were able to complete in 10 hours of backlink building. This should be 2 WHOLE DAYS OF WORK if you consider an employee taking a lunch, and general time for emails and regular meetings with work colleagues. Keep in mind this includes ZERO landing pages. OUR 10 HOUR SEO SERVICE WOULD TYPICALLY INCLUDE 2 LANDING PAGES IN ADDITION TO BACKLINK BUILDING.

GoDaddy SEO Backlink Building – These links in all honesty aren’t “bad” backlinks, but they are mostly low quality backlinks from websites with poor ratings AND are NOT relevant to the REGION OR INDUSTRY of the business. The directories are NOT the first we would choose by far, AND many of the websites ARE NOT U.S. DOMAINS, meaning they are foreign websites. NOT GOOD FOR LOCAL SEO! This was literally our 1 request…

That said, it appears like an actual human was commenting on articles, which is the only way this service should be done. That’s good. – BUT the overall return on 10 hours of work is still extremely LOW. There was ZERO collaboration on anything throughout this entire process.

If you don’t know SEO it may seem like you are getting some value out of their service, and compared to most competition they’re sorta “on par” for the low price they charge. HOWEVER, GoDaddy is a low energy, low value, low price, low ROI option for SEO services with HORRIBLE customer service and a CONFUSED team.
